Safety and Supervision
3 Hours Per Day - 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
5 Days per week/178 days in Full Work Year

Position serves Mulino Elementary School
JOB GOAL: Under the direction of the Principal, the Safety and Supervision Instructional Assistant (SSIA) performs a variety of tasks in an effort to ensure that students are supervised and safe during the school day, primarily during arrival/dismissal, lunch, recess and emergency drills. Working with students individually or in small/large groups, the SSIA assists in promoting and maintaining a safe and orderly school environment in the cafeteria, hallways, restrooms, auditorium and on the playground and parking lot while supervising student arrival and dismissal, overseeing lunch periods, and planning and/or overseeing individual and group activities during recess; assists with resolving low level student conflicts and provides supportive instruction and direction when disruptive behaviors occur; may also assist in providing de-escalation breaks for students with heightened behaviors during the school day.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed for the position.
- High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
- 18 years of age or older
- Ability to work harmoniously with others and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students and staff
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to supervise individual or groups of students in group settings without constant teacher oversight;
- Ability to provide supervision to students who need assistance with norming social skills
- Ability to possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid card
- Ability to use computer to access email, attendance reporting software, student referral software, assigned online training modules, and various documents for review as requested by the district.
- Ability to work effectively in an environment which can be both physically and emotionally fatiguing; and perform physically demanding requirements of the job which may include
- Moderate degree of physical stamina
- Frequent standing, walking, bending
- Possible exposure to bodily fluids in assisting students in the cafeteria and in tending to injury and illness on the playground.
- Frequent outdoor exposure to the elements including cold and hot temperatures
- Such alternatives to the above requirements as the School Board or the Administration may deem appropriate and acceptable.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.
- Assist staff in maintaining a safe and orderly school environment
- Devise strategies for reinforcing positive behaviors among students based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities
- Assist in the supervision of students in group or one-on-one settings, often without direct teacher or administrator supervision;
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information
- Assist in monitoring student behaviors and handling conflicts that arise in accordance with the district's discipline procedures
- Supervise students in and outside of the classroom with an understanding of and provision for a safe environment
- Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, and play periods
- Alert the principal or other licensed staff regarding any issues or special information about individual or groups of students
- Participate in in-service programs and relevant training as assigned
- Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem to be appropriate to the Board or Administration.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:
- Possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid card.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Days and hours to be arranged, with salary according to current schedule.
EVALUATION: Following the probationary period, performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
