JOB GOAL: The goal of the District Nurse is to work within the generally accepted framework of professional nursing standards of care to deliver a school-based health program that provides a continuum of care and delivery of services for all students to achieve their optimal potential while ensuring that all district, state, and federal guidelines regarding health protocols and medication management are followed.

 

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: The district nurse works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of the Director of Student Services and the designated school administrator and under the guidance of the department head.  To perform this job successfully, the district nurse must also meet the following requirements:

 

  1. Hold an RN with a BSN with the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
  2. Have prior successful nursing experience, preferably in a public health, public school or pediatric nursing setting.
  3. Possess knowledge of child growth and development at each level of instruction and have the ability to understand procedures and function in a school system with regard to the role health services play in the students’ overall education.
  4. Possess knowledge of the development of health protocols, medication management, and delegation responsibilities.
  5. Possess basic public health preparation and field experience combined with the ability to provide student education in areas such as personal safety, nutrition, and personal hygiene.
  6. Possess functional computer literacy skills using the Microsoft and Google suites of applications including Word, Excel, Google email and calendar and have a general understanding of how computers can assist instruction. Synergy experience preferred.
  7. Maintain satisfactory attendance as defined in District policy and regulations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Communication:

  1. Communicate effectively with parents, students, and staff both verbally and in writing.
  2. Maintain communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance the overall goal of meeting the health and safety needs of students.
  3. Work cooperatively with a diverse population of students, parents, district staff, and community members.
  1. Recommend modifications of the school program for students who require accommodations due to disabilities.
  2. Make appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandatory reporter.
  3. Respond to parent and staff inquiries promptly and confidentially and disseminate information to appropriate staff in a timely manner.
  4. Share ideas and resources collaboratively.
  5. Use various communication tools to interact in a timely manner with audience specific, clear, and correct spoken and written language.
  6. Address concerns of others in a positive and professional manner including listening and responding to questions, suggestions, concerns and comments in a respectful and proactive manner.
  7. Maintain ongoing communication with administrators and supervisors and keep them informed of program activities and concerns.

 

Data Collection and Records Management:

  1. Collect and analyzes school health information and makes recommendations based upon statistical data.
  2. Manage school health records in accordance with state and district requirements, providing efficient retrieval of information and other related archival responsibilities.
  3. Write the health components of Individual Education Plans and Section 504 Plans as needed.
  4. Maintain accurate medical records, as defined by school, department, or District guidelines, to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions (Oregon State Board of Nursing).
  5. Develop and maintain current health plans for students who need special nursing interventions during the school day.

 

Direct Nursing Services and Program Management:

  1. Establish and manage health screening programs according to state mandates and guidelines.
  2. Participate in the development of health-related policies and procedures in compliance with current health practices.
  3. Provide and/or delegate direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff including nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation.
  4. Provide health information and counseling for students, parents, and staff.
  5. Develop and/or follow existing medication protocols to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school.
  6. Cooperate and collaborate with community service organizations and county, state and federal agencies as directed.
  7. Set professional goals, assessing progress, and modifying as needed.

 Overall:

 

In performing all of the above duties:

 

  1. Work collaboratively in the professional learning community with other teachers, support staff, and any others deemed appropriate, in addressing the needs of students, developing effective practices, and developing and implementing best practices.
  2. Maintain confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues in communication, records management and in providing direct services.
  3. Actively participate in staff and department meetings and accept shared responsibility for other duties and committees.
  4. Participate in working toward the accomplishment of district, school and department goals and objectives in alignment with the district’s mission, vision, and pillars.
  5. Follow school policies and procedures, standard practices and approved curriculum.
  6. Consistently observe and appropriately respond to the immediate and foreseeable needs and challenges of students and promptly engage an administrator or appropriate educational staff as appropriate when handling situations.
  7. Create and maintain a positive and inviting environment in the assigned physical work area.
  8. Assist in the supervision of students at school activities and events when needed.
  9. Support and consult with classroom teachers and building staff as needed regarding health protocols and medication needs.
  10. Comply with federal and state laws and District regulations/policies.
  11. Adjust to changing conditions in unexpected situations.
  12. Maintain current research-based content knowledge and nursing practices and engage in opportunities for professional development to constantly enhance skills and stay abreast of new research and development.
  13. Perform other duties and responsibilities as are assigned and deemed appropriate by administration and the board of directors.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:

  1. RN with BSN with the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
  2. Possess and maintain a valid First Aid card if required
  3. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  4. Valid Oregon Driver’s license and personal vehicle properly insured for travel between schools and district office locations.
