Wages based on 2020-21 Wage Schedule. 2021-22 Wage Schedule to be determined.

 

  

JOB GOAL: The goal of the Districtwide Head Custodian/Groundskeeper is to care for and maintain the cleanliness, safety and attractiveness of district facilities and grounds to create aesthetically pleasing learning and athletic environments for staff, students, families, and the community.

 

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed for the position.

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
  2. Three years’ experience in school custodial and/or maintenance work and one year’s experience in grounds, lawn care and landscaping
  3. 21 years of age or older 
  1. Ability to:
    • work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively, in English, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, staff and the general public
    • understand and follow oral and written instructions
    • maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information
    • work independently with minimal supervision at multiple worksites
    • prioritize tasks to meet deadlines while maintaining schedules and attending to details
    • participate in in-service programs as assigned
    • understand and follow safety requirements and procedures for the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials for working around asbestos and electrical equipment
  2. Perform physical requirements which may include: 
  • Moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
  • Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, bending
  • Exposure to conditions, including outdoor weather, and where heating, cooling, and ventilation may be inadequate at times
  • May require exposure to chemicals, dirt, paint, chalk, noise, odors and the possibility of electrical shock
  • Ability to operate buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, tractors, dump truck, large and small lawn mowers, district vehicles, forklift, power tools and other equipment as needed.
  • Ability to climb ladders stretch, bend, and attain heights to perform cleaning and repairs including gutters, roofs, drains and small electrical repairs.
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids when cleaning due to student illness or injury
  • Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as deemed appropriate and acceptable by the School Board or Administration.

 

Custodial Requirements:

  1. Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in building service work
  2. Familiarity with handling and disposal of hazardous materials;
  3. Ability to:
    • safely use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency
    • perform light maintenance and repairs (i.e. plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc.)
    • ensure proper operation of heating and lighting systems
    • requisition, account for, and maintain an inventory for supplies and equipment
    • perform basic clerical skills to complete required reports in accordance with building/district policies and procedures (i.e. safety, fire drills, vandalism, maintenance, and etc.) 

 

Grounds keeping Requirements:

  1. Knowledge of:
    • the operation of power equipment and the ability to maintain, such as large and small mowers, chainsaws, tractors, forklifts, light trucks, sprayers, and hedge shears
    • the application, storage and safe use of all chemicals and pesticides
    • the common plant turf diseases and insect pests and methods used to control them
    • irrigation systems and repairs
    • security systems, (i.e. electronic and key locks)
  2. Ability to:
    • establish and maintain the turf of lawns and athletic fields and to landscape
    • perform safety inspections annually on district vehicles and to prepare reports as required

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.

 

Custodial:

  1. Perform essential custodial duties of sweeping, dusting, mopping, buffing, scrubbing, sanitizing, vacuuming, etc.
  2. Perform light maintenance and repairs, plumbing, carpentry, painting, replacing light bulbs, moving furniture and materials, etc.
  3. Inspect facility, grounds, and equipment to determine needed cleaning repair and maintenance
  4. Plan long term and short term preventative maintenance and cleaning schedules and an emergency repair system
  5. Requisition custodial supplies and equipment and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment
  6. Open, close and secure all buildings to complete required daily duties and respond to alarm calls when buildings are not in use.
  7. Provide training in safety, use of hazardous materials, use of equipment, custodial methodology, etc.
  8. Confer with athletic director and maintenance supervisor regarding care and cleaning programs for the buildings for which you are responsible (district office, Land Lab, Athletic Facilities)

 

Grounds:

  1. Care for all lawn areas including athletic fields by watering, mowing, seeding, fertilizing, and spraying as needed
  2. Prepare athletic fields for appropriate activities as prescribed by athletic director
  3. Care for hedges, shrubs, trees, including pruning, trimming, disease and pest control
  4. Plant seeds, bulbs and annuals as needed and provide care for them throughout their growing season
  5. Respond to any maintenance emergency that arises, (i.e. plumbing problems, broken windows, locks, doors, vandalism repairs, etc.)
  6. Maintain repair of equipment and district vehicle including responsibility for all grounds related equipment
  7. Maintain the district warehouse supplies
  8. Serve as district liaison with vendors in locating and obtaining materials, parts, and supplies, (i.e. chemical supplies, custodial paper and etc.)
  9. Supervise student workers as required
  10. Assist with winter maintenance including snow and ice removal from sidewalks, roofs, entryways and driveways and sand, salt or ash application to prevent slipping
  11. Participate in in-service programs as assigned
  12. Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may be deemed appropriate to the School Board or Administration

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:

  1. Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid card
  2. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  3. Valid Oregon Driver's License
  4. Limited Maintenance Industrial/Electrical License (preferred)
  5. Oregon Pesticide Applicator's License as required by ORS 634.006 (17)&(18), 634.116 (15B)&(15C), Oregon Administrative Rule 603-57-001 (8) & 603-57-200 (b) & 2, Department of Agriculture

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, hours to be arranged.

 

EVALUATION: Following the probationary period, performance of this job will be evaluated

annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
