JOB GOAL: A teacher on special assignment is a teacher whose assignment is outside of the classroom. The goal of a teacher on special assignment is to provide his/her expertise, skills, talents, and knowledge in order to improve the quality of instruction thereby increasing student achievement. TOSA positions support both the site-based instructional/educational program needs of students and the unique needs of students and staff District-wide.  TOSAs whose major responsibility is instructional support, teacher training, and/or curriculum development must have significant experience in classroom instruction.

 

Under the direction of the Director of Teaching and Learning, the goal of the TOSA – Student Access & Engagement, is to ensure the district has highly effective systems, practices and programs to ensure access, engagement, and equitable outcomes for all students, with special emphasis on students who are English Learners.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Demonstrates leadership in the school for the purpose of school, program and instructional improvement.
  2. Possesses advanced knowledge of best practices and teaching techniques. Works collaboratively with teachers and administrators to ensure access, engagement, and equitable outcomes for all students.
  3. Participates in collaborative decision making processes and communicates a clear understanding of those decisions. Keeps principal informed of program activities and concerns, communicating special activities in a timely manner to all affected stakeholders and acts as a liaison among District personnel.
  4. Facilitates continuous improvement in classroom instruction by providing instructional support to teachers.  This may include areas of lesson design, classroom management, aligning instruction with curriculum, and developing effective classroom assessments and progress monitoring. Demonstrates knowledge of current District standards, benchmarks, and curriculum.
  5. Coordinates with outside agencies in compliance with legal requirements and District guidelines and policies. Develops partnerships within the community, develops relationships with key individuals from outside organizations. Communicates information about District programs and special activities in a timely manner to all affected community members. TOSA may be asked to serve as district representative under the supervision of the Director of Teaching and Learning. 
  6. Coordinates and presents professional development, technical assistance, and curriculum/school improvement projects, under the guidance of the principal.
  7. Works closely with teachers, administrators, parents and students ensuring that the differing needs of all students are met so they may engage productively in furthering their education.
  8. Consults with Director of Teaching and Learning and principals in the development and implementation of programs to close the achievement gap and support individual student needs.
  9. May assist with the writing of instructionally related grants and facilitation of grant projects.
  10. Assists teachers and administrators in developing plans and introducing strategies to support positive student outcomes.
  11. Works and communicates effectively with students, parents, and staff from diverse cultures.
  12. Utilizes collaborative leadership skills to resolve complex issues and concerns for educators, students, parents and the community.
  13. Plans and implements inclusive practices K – 12 in collaboration with district administrators to support equitable and inclusionary student learning experiences resulting in improved educational outcomes for students.
  14. Completes other assignments and participates in other projects as designated by supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully an individual must meet the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 584-020-000 to 584-020-0045).

 

  • Proficient English oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in the use of computer and internet based applications including but not limited to email, Word, and Synergy
  • Master’s degree in education with preferred emphasis in ELL and elementary education
  • Prefer a candidate currently enrolled in a school administrative preparation program.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:

  1. Possess and maintain current Oregon teaching license including ELL endorsement
  2. Possess and maintain a valid First Aid card if required
  3. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Days and hours to be arranged, with salary according to current schedule.

 

EVALUATION: Following the probationary period, performance of this job will be evaluated

annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of licensed personnel.
